An evening of pot smoking turned violent for a group of people in a room at a north side motel, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Police were called to a room at the Hyatt Place Hotel in the 7600 block of Jones-Maltsburger about 11:30 last night after a guest reported the odor of marijuana coming from room 211.
Police Chief William McManus says when officers arrived, they knocked on the door, and were greeted by a 34 year old man with a gun in his waistband.
"The first thing he did when he saw the officer outside the door was reach for a weapon in his waistband," McManus told 1200 WOAI news. "The officer pushed him back, drew his weapon and fired once, striking him in the midsection."
The gunman was rushed to the hospital. In the struggle that followed the shooting, McManus says the officer suffered a hand injury and he is being treated.
No other officers or suspects were injured. Three other people at the pot party were arrested. The wounded man is expected to face charges, potentially attempted capital murder.
The SAPD officer who shot the man has been placed on desk duty, as is routine while SAPD shooting team officers investigate.
